HISTORY

LOVE, DEATH & DIVORCE

Hopper was born in Hawkins, Indiana to Jim Hopper Sr and an unnamed mother, where he met Dianne, his future wife. He would go on to serve in the Chemical Corps during the Vietnam War, specifically dealing with Agent Orange, going on to believe this exposure is what caused his daughters cancer some years after. After returning to Hawkins, Hopper and Dianne decided to move to New York, where Dianne became a preschool teacher and Hooper joined the NYPD as a homicide detective. They moved after Sara was born, presumably meaning Sara was born while Hopper was serving. While in New York, Hopper was initially a homicide detective (investigating at least one prolific serial killer), then spent time undercover on New York's streets investigating a series of murders, gangs and shady federal agents. After Sara's diagnosis with cancer and death, Hopper turned to alcohol and substance abuse to cope and divorced. He then later returned to Hawkins, around 1978/79 to take the position as Chief of Police, presumably taking over after his fathers retirement.

FATHERHOOD 2: ELECTRIC BOOGALOO

His drinking followed him to Hawkins, and by the time of season 1 it's clear he's let himself go, become moderately lazy and maybe a little corrupt himself, playing fast and loose with his power as CoP. Hopper's last few years as Hawkins' CoP were eventful to say the least. He found himself in the middle of a governmental conspiracy, a parallel hell dimension, monsters, and a new daughter. Hopper was initially resistant to the odder events of ST, but came around fairly fast. This was likely thanks to his experiences as a cop in New York. The chance to investigate and operate a little outside of the rules seemed to ignite a passion in Hopper than had otherwise faded since Sara's passing and his divorce. S2 saw him insert himself into the Byers' families life as a way to keep tabs on the lab officials monitoring of Will Byers, and, establishing himself as Eleven's guardian (shakily). S3 saw him loosen up a little and allow Eleven the freedom she desperately craved, and, by extension, experience what it's like to be a father of a Teenage Girl (terrible, worst summer of his life). Hopper definitely had some growing pains as a father and as someone trying to Woo The Ladies (Joyce), but seemed to be getting the hang of it before sacrificing himself to save the world (also terrible, continuing events of the worst summer of his life.)

THE GULAG

While the world thought Hopper was dead, he was actually somewhere much worse: Soviet Russia. As a prisoner, Hopper really had to reach into the darker aspects of himself to survive, relying on the corruption of the Soviet guards, and on his own inner corruption to stay alive. He did not lose hope of escaping, even when his escape attempts failed. It may have died a little when he realised even in Russia, he could not escape the worst summer of his life ie when he realised the Russian's had their own fight club situation ft a Demogorgan and their inmates. (It probably came back when Joyce and Murray showed up in Russia by the grace of god and saved him.)
